Citizen Science at Monte Ciocci Park
Participatory monitoring of Urban Green Space and its benefits
On April 15, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Monte Ciocci Park in Rome will host the first event dedicated to Citizen Science within the Real Urban Green project.
This open initiative invites citizens, associations, students, and experts to take part in a shared experience of urban green monitoring, contributing to the development of a participatory model for managing urban green spaces. This event is part of the Real Urban Green pilot activities in Rome, one of the eight pilot areas involved in the project across Europe. Among these, three pilot cities – including Rome – are implementing concrete investments in Nature-based Solutions (NbS), contributing to the development of replicable models for urban resilience and sustainable green space management.
What to expect
Participants will explore how Citizen Science can support environmental sustainability and community engagement through hands-on activities and collaborative learning.
The programme includes:
- Introduction to Citizen Science and its benefits for the environment and society
- Launch of the first participatory monitoring activities (part of the project’s action framework)
- Field experiments on soil, biodiversity, microclimate, and urban space quality
- Contribution to the co-creation of a participatory governance model for urban green areas
GREENGAGE App
During the event, participants will be introduced to the GREENGAGE app, a free tool available on Android and iOS that allows users to:
- Monitor and improve urban green spaces
- Contribute to shared decision-making
- Strengthen local communities through data collection and collaboration
Speakers

- Giorgio Scavino – Citizen Science Expert, Risorse per Roma
- Giulia Navarra – GREENGAGE App, Ecoinspire Lab ETS
Why it matters
The event contributes to the creation of an open and accessible database on urban green spaces, supporting more transparent, informed, and participatory public decision-making.
It represents a concrete step towards more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable cities, where citizens actively shape the future of their environment.
