Our story

RealUrbanGreen is a European project led by The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy Association, co-financed by the Interreg Euro-MED Programme. Launched in 2025, the project brings together partners from 8 countries to co-design and co-implement climate-resilient urban green spaces (UGS) through participatory and nature-based approaches.

Over three years, RealUrbanGreen will test an innovative holistic model in 8 pilot sites – ranging from historic villages to large cities – each addressing local climate and environmental challenges. The project empowers local authorities, citizens, and stakeholders to work together to enhance biodiversity, public health, and environmental quality in urban areas.

By combining citizen science, ecosystem services, and collaborative planning, RealUrbanGreen aims to unlock the full potential of urban green spaces and create sustainable, inclusive, and replicable solutions for the Euro-MED region.

REAL URBAN GREEN OVER TIME

Detail urban green infrastructure

RealUrbanGreen is a three-year journey (2025–2027) to co-create greener, healthier, and more climate-resilient urban areas across the Euro-MED region.
From the kick-off in Locorotondo to pilot site implementations, each phase builds on transnational cooperation, citizen engagement, and nature-based innovation.
Step by step, the project turns local green spaces into shared laboratories for sustainable change.

OUR CONSORTIUM

Led by The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy Association, RealUrbanGreen brings together a diverse transnational partnership under the Interreg Euro‑MED framework.

In addition to the lead partner, the consortium includes foundations, universities, non-profit associations, and service companies from Spain, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Portugal, and Italy. This multidisciplinary team combines scientific and technical expertise with hands-on implementation capacity across different urban green spaces.

Within Italy, the project’s pilot locations are spearheaded by the Municipality of Locorotondo (Apulia) and the Municipality of Rome, where site-specific activities will be designed, tested, and co-implemented.

The consortium ensures that every phase—from participatory assessments to co-design and citizen science—engages end users, local authorities, and stakeholders in shaping healthier, climate-resilient green spaces.

Together, this collaborative network validates a flexible model suited to a wide array of Mediterranean urban green settings, delivering co-designed improvement plans and joint implementation agreements with local administrations and the community.
