Real Urban Green is a Euro-MED project that develops and tests an innovative, holistic model to co-design and co-manage healthy, multifunctional, and climate-resilient Urban Green Spaces (UGS). Parks, gardens, and green areas provide vital ecosystem services—such as air purification, cooling, flood mitigation, and social well-being—but they are increasingly threatened by climate change, soil degradation, and fragmented planning.

The project addresses these challenges through a participatory model involving local authorities, citizens, and stakeholders at all stages: from assessment using citizen science (WP1), to co-design of nature-based solutions (WP2), and co-implementation of improvement plans (WP3). The model is being tested in 8 pilot sites across diverse urban contexts and climates in the EuroMED area.

By promoting collaboration and integrating ecosystem services into urban policies, Real Urban Green empowers communities to shape greener, healthier, and more resilient cities. The final outcome will be a transferable model for wider replication, supported by communication, policy labs, and capacity-building actions.

Focus

resilient green spaces

Urban green spaces are vital for our health, wellbeing, and the planet, but they are increasingly under pressure.

Climate change, land degradation, and lack of citizen engagement often limit their potential. That’s where RealUrbanGreen comes in.

The project focuses on:

  • Co-creating healthier, more resilient green spaces in diverse urban contexts

  • Combining science, nature, and community knowledge

  • Developing a flexible model to guide local authorities and stakeholders

  • Strengthening cooperation between citizens, institutions, and experts

RealUrbanGreen places people and nature at the heart of urban transformation—making green spaces not just places, but shared processes of change.
